One of the original Vedic DEVIS. In the Rigveda she is an exalted goddess, but has declined in post-Rigvedic texts, warding off the evil spirits of the nights and heralding the dawn. She has a plural form, meaning 'the dawns'. She is depicted as a beautiful young woman riding a golden chariot on her path across the sky. Due to her colour she is often identified with reddish cows and both are released by INDRA from the Vala cave at the beginning of time
