Thor, the most powerful of the Norse gods, is the son of ODIN (WOTAN) and JORD (Earth, or Fjorgyn). Little is known of his wife SIF other than that she has golden hair made for her by the dwarfs after LOKI cut off her natural hair. He is red-haired and red-bearded and rides a chariot or wagon driven by two goats. He carries a magical war-hammer, Mjollnir, which, when thrown, returns to his iron-gloved hands. He also wears an iron belt which doubles his strength. He is known as the Charioteer or Thunder God. His deadly enemy is the World Serpent Jormungandr. His attributes closely resemble those of JUPITER – both are thunder gods, both are children of the earth mother, and both have the oak as their sacred tree. Thor’s family includes son MAGNI (with the giantess JARNSAXA) and THRUD(R), MÓDI and LORIDI with Sif. The recurrence of his name in one form or another throughout the Indo-European world from the Finno-Ugric theatre (Tiermes, Tordom, Torun) to the Hittite TARHUNT and even the Vedic INDRA give Thor semi-global and ancient credentials
