A god of the North Sea with many of the same characteristics as NEPTUNE. He appears to be of Norse origin, brought to the west of Scotland and north-east of Ireland coasts and the Isle of Man by the Vikings. His worship on the Isle of Lewis was particularly strong and is thought to have lasted into the 19th century, when fishermen would pour libations of ale into the sea and ask for a good harvest of ‘sea-ware’, which included seaweed as well as fish.
