The Yoruba, Fon and Edo people's god of the sea, fresh water and wealth. The name means 'owner of oceans' and the deity protects mariners. He is protector of the sacred Benin river of the same name, Olokun, out of which arise the souls of unborn chldren. In Olokun's female form (the deity can be either male or female) she is the wife of OLORUN and mother to OBATALA and ODUDUA. As a male, he is the eldest son/daughter of OSANOBUA and works with OYA, deity of the winds, and ENGUNGUN, collective spirit of the ancestors, to protect the people and give them wisdom. He/she is portrayed unflatteringly with a coral dress and mudfish legs, and holding lizards in both hands
