A deity worshipped in northern Britain by lower ranking soldiers (who associated him with war and hunting god MARS) and by the Romano-British, who saw him as a manifestation of SILVANUS, god of forests, groves and pasture. Many inscriptions and representations of Cocidius have been found along the Hadrian's Wall corridor, and he is likely to have had a major temple at Bewcastle, near the Solway estuary, a Roman town named Fanucodi, (temple of Cocidius). One inscription, at Ebchester, calls him C. Vernustonus, Cocidius of the Alder Tree. He is often depicted brandishing a shield and sword or spear. He is depicted also on a stone relief found at Risingham, Yorkshire
