A mythical ten-tusked, five-trunked white elephant, 'king of all elephants', who carries INDRA into war, notably against VRITRA. The name Abhra-Matanga means 'elephant of the clouds' and refers to Airavat's legendary ability to create clouds. This ability is itself linked to Airavat's habit of reaching down into the watery underworld, sucking up its water and spraying it into the clouds, which Indra then turns into rain.
